Outstanding Federal Tax Credits and Rebates for Solar and Battery Systems
Residential and Commercial
Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC)
In the United States, the federal Investment Tax Credit is a significant incentive for solar installations. It allows homeowners and businesses to deduct 30% of the cost of installing a solar energy system from their federal taxes. However, the residential 30% federal solar tax credit expires December 31, and you may need to act sooner than you think.
Commercial
Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS)
This tax-driven depreciation method is used in the United States to enable businesses to recover the costs of certain assets, such as commercial solar energy systems over a specified period. Commercial solar installations are classified under the 5-year property category within the MACRS framework.
As of January 2022, the MACRS depreciation schedule for 5-year property involves a 20% depreciation in the first year, followed by declining percentages in subsequent years. Importantly, businesses can currently take advantage of bonus depreciation as outlined by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). A 60% deduction is available from 2024 to January 2025, followed by 40% in 2025 to January 2026, and 20% from 2026 to January 2027.

The Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP)
The Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) is a vital California initiative aimed at accelerating the adoption of renewable energy and energy storage technologies. Managed by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), SGIP provides financial incentives to residential, commercial, and industrial customers who install qualifying systems. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing energy independence, and supporting energy resilience, SGIP is a cornerstone of California’s renewable energy strategy.
What Is SGIP? SGIP offers rebates for installing renewable energy and energy storage solutions, including solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and battery storage. These incentives encourage investment in clean energy technologies that combat climate change, integrate renewable energy more effectively, and strengthen grid reliability.
Note: Rebate amounts and program requirements for SGIP can change at any time. For the most up-to-date information, visit the official SGIP site at selfgenca.com.
