How to Change the Oil and Oil Filter on a Generac Home Standby Generator

*Make sure to review the Pre-Oil Change Checks article before starting your oil change.

Proper maintenance of your Generac Home Standby Generator is essential to keep it running efficiently. If your generator was manufactured after 2017 and falls within the 10 kW to 26 kW Guardian series, this guide will walk you through the process of changing the oil and oil filter. For maintenance details specific to your model, refer to your generator’s owner’s manual. If you need help finding it, check the Generac Owner’s Manual and Specifications Guide.

Follow these steps to change the oil and oil filter on your Generac generator:

Step 1: Warm Up the Generator

If the generator has been running during a power outage, refer to the “Shutting the Generator Off” section in the Generator Shutdown Guide. Otherwise, open the generator’s lid and press the MANUAL button on the control panel. Let the engine run for 3–5 minutes to warm up, then press the OFF button to shut it down.

Step 2: Drain the Oil

After the generator cools, remove the front panel. Locate the oil drain hose (A) and pull it free from its retaining clip. Remove the cap from the hose and drain the oil into an appropriate container.

For detailed visuals and exact drain locations for your generator model, refer to this Generac Support Guide.

Step 3: Replace the Oil Filter

Once the oil has drained, secure the oil drain hose with a cap and clip. Remove the old oil filter (B) by turning it counterclockwise. Before installing the new filter, apply a thin layer of clean engine oil to its gasket. Screw the new filter on by hand until the gasket lightly contacts the adapter, then tighten it an additional ¾ to 1 full turn.

Step 4: Add New Oil

Fill the engine with the recommended oil for your generator model. Use the dipstick or fill cap to check the oil level. Be careful not to overfill.

Step 5: Test for Leaks

Start the generator by pressing the MANUAL button on the control panel. Let it run for one minute and inspect for leaks. Press the OFF button to stop the engine and wait five minutes. Check the oil level again and add more if necessary.

Step 6: Return to AUTO Mode

If your generator was running during an outage, follow the “Turning the Generator Back On” steps in the Generator Shutdown Guide. Otherwise, press the AUTO button on the control panel to return the generator to standby mode.

Step 7: Finalize and Dispose of Waste

Close and lock the generator lid. Dispose of the used oil and filter according to local, state, or national regulations.
